Mission Statement and Purpose:
We affirm the strength brought to the study of law by a law student’s personal religious convictions. We strive through public service and diligence in our studies to promote fairness and virtue founded upon the rule of law. The purpose of JRC is to offer a forum of activities that provide the opportunity for the promotion of professionalism and sound ethics in the Law School Environment. Furthermore, its purpose is to instill in its members the importance of Family, Religion, and Morals within the future practice of law.
ARTICLE I - NAME
The name of this organization shall be the J. Reuben Clark Law Society (JRCLS) of Washburn University School of Law.
ARTICLE II - MEMBERSHIP
Membership in this organization shall be open to all students, faculty, and alumni of the Washburn University School of Law.
Membership dues shall be $10 per year, subject to modification. Dues shall be collected for the purposes of advancing the mission statement of the organization.
A member is defined as one who has paid one’s dues. To become a member, membership dues must be paid, otherwise they are guests and unable to participate as officers or in voting, but may participate in all other activities.
All activities shall be to promote the purpose of the JRCLS and shall be in accordance with the general standards of the Church Education Honor Code of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
ARTICLE III - EXECUTIVE BOARD
The Executive Board shall be composed of the President, Executive Vice President, Secretary/Treasurer.
The Executive Board shall have the authority to act on behalf of the general membership of the organization in all matters except removal of Board members and any amendments to the Constitution. The Executive Board may submit any issue to the general membership, by a motion to that effect, approved by a majority of those voting at a Board meeting.
All persons testifying in the name of the Society must have the prior approval of the Executive Board.
All Executive Board meetings shall be open to the general membership but general members will be unable to vote at said meetings.
ARTICLE IV - OFFICERS
Officers of this organization shall include a President, Executive Vice President, Secretary/Treasurer.
Officers shall serve for one year or until they graduate, whichever comes first.
Officers, shall be students officially affiliated with the WU School of Law, and must be classified as being in good standing with the University. In the event that there are not enough students to fill the officer positions, officers may be any member of the JRCLS organization, including faculty and alumni of Washburn University School of Law.
Officers must be due paying members of the JRCLS prior to being placed into a leadership position.
- Preside over all meetings
- Be responsible for all matters in the efficient administration and operation of the organization
- Assist in planning events and programming of the organization
- Act as the chief spokesperson for the organization
- Assist with Presidential duties
- Serve as President in the President's absence
- Assist in general operation of the organization
- Maintain an accounting of the organizations monies.
- Keep a list of activities, including the number of people in attendance and their proposed budget.
- Collect and deposit all dues paid by membership.
- Keep minutes during the meetings.
- Collect and deposit all dues paid by membership; dues shall be deposited by at least two officers.
ARTICLE V - MEETINGS
There will be two official meetings scheduled each year: an Organizational meeting and a Summation meeting. Other official meetings shall be held periodiically by the Board to address the business of the organization.
Any member may request a meeting-at-large.
Notice of all official meetings shall be posted at the law school at least one week in advance.
In the event that an Executive Board member is unavailable for an official meeting, said member may appoint a proxy from the general membership of the organization.
ARTICLE VI - ELECTIONS
The Board shall be elected at the end of the Spring Semester. Election shall be by secret ballot with a majority of the organization's quorum voting at: the meeting. An election shall consist of at least one fourth of the organization's members for the current school year.
Before an individual can be placed on the election ballot, he must first be a member of the JRCLS and in good standing with the Washburn University School of Law.
In the event that any Board member or Director is unable to serve his or her full term, the existing Board members may call an official meeting for the purposes of electing a successor to serve for the remainder of the unexpired term.
ARTICLE VII - AMENDMENTS
Amendments to this constitution may be proposed by any member. All proposed amendments shall be brought before the members and approved by a two thirds majority of the organization.
AMENDMENT I - BYLAWS
The Board shall have the authority to create bylaws to further the goals of the Washburn University Chapter of the J. Rueben Clark Society. All proposed bylaws shall be noticed to the entire Chapter seven days in advance of voting. Voting shall take place at a meeting and the majority of the organization’s members who participate in said voting shall decide whether or not to adopt the amendment. Voting may be conducted with one-fourth or more of the members present.
