ENVIRONMENTAL LAW SOCIETY CONSTITUTION
PREAMBLE
The mission of the Environmental Law Society is to promote discussion and awareness of environmental issues by hosting speakers and student discussion with attorneys practicing environmental law, coordinating community projects, and promoting social activities. Our goals are to enhance legal education through the environmental law program at Washburn Law School and to promote internships/externships and career opportunities in environmental law in both the public and private sectors.
ARTICLE I - NAME
The name of this organization shall be the Environmental Law Society of Washburn University School of Law.
ARTICLE II - MEMBERSHIP
- Membership in this organization shall be open to all students, faculty, and alumni of the Washburn University School of law.
- Membership dues shall be $10 per semester or $20 per year, subject to modification. Dues shall be collected for the purpose of advancing the mission statement of the organization.
ARTICLE III - OFFICERS
- Officers of this organization shall include a President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary.
- Officers shall serve for one year or until they graduate, whichever comes first.
- Officers must be classified as being in good standing with the University.
- The President shall:
- Preside over all meetings
- Be responsible for all matters in the efficient administration and operation of the organization
- Assist in planning events and programming of the organization
- Act as the chief spokesperson for the organization
- Post notices of membership meetings, agendas, and any other public functions of the organization at appropriate locations
- Create and forward the organization's orientation letter to incoming law students
- The Vice President shall:
- Assist with Presidential duties
- Serve as President in the President's absence
- Assist in general operations of the organization
- The Treasurer shall:
- Maintain, disburse, and account for all current monies raised by or donated to the organization
- The Secretary shall:
- Record minutes of all membership meetings
- Post minutes of all meetings
- Maintain correspondence with other organizations
ARTICLE IV - MEETINGS
- There will be at least two official meetings scheduled each year: an Informational meeting scheduled during the early part of each Fall semester and an Election meeting scheduled during the early part of each Spring semester. Other meetings shall be held periodically to address the business of the organization.
- Any member may request a meeting.
- Notice of all official meetings shall be posted at the law school at least one week in advance.
- A quorum shall be required in order to transact business at meetings which are publicly announced. A quorum shall consist of one-fourth of the organization's dues-paying membership for the current semester.
- Official action may be taken by a majority of the officers. Official action is any action involving commitment of over $50, elections, commitment of the Society's name, and/or commitment of the Society's participation in public events or forums.
- In the event that an officer is unavailable for an official meeting, said officer may appoint a proxy from the general membership of the organization.
ARTICLE V - ELECTIONS
- The officers shall be elected at the annual Election meeting. Election shall be by secret ballot with a majority of the organization's quorum voting at the meeting. A quorum shall consist of one-fourth of the organization's dues-paying membership.
- In the event that any officer is unable to serve his or her full term, an official meeting shall be called for the purpose of electing a successor to serve for the remainder of the unexpired term.
- In the event that there is no quorum for the scheduled Election meeting, a simple majority vote of the organization's dues-paying members present at said meeting will be recognized as the acceptable quorum for administration of said election.
ARTICLE VI - AMENDMENTS
Amendments to this constitution may be proposed by any member. All proposed amendments shall be brought before the members and approved by a two-thirds majority of the organization's dues-paying members. Copies of the proposed amendment shall be provided to all members at least one week prior to the date of the approval vote.
ARTICLE VII - RATIFICATION
This constitution shall be considered ratified upon a vote of approval by a two-thirds majority of the organization's dues-paying membership.
